Deacons fall in opening doubleheader against Chestnut Hill

NEWARK, NJ - The baseball team fell to 0-2 in CACC play Saturday, as they lost a pair of tightly-played contests to the Chestnut Hill College Griffins in their opening series at Westside Park.

In the opener, right fielder Emilio Fernandez ripped an RBI triple in the gap, scoring Chris Rosa who'd singled earlier in the inning.  Alberto Ruiz followed two hitters later with a two-out RBI single of his own, giving the Deacons a quick 2-0 cushion in the bottom of the first.  That would be all southpaw Sean Stimpfel would need, surrendering an earned run over eight brilliant innings of work.

But the Deacons bats could not add to the lead, and the Griffins were able to rally with a three-run ninth inning to take a 4-2 lead.  BC was unable to mount a comeback of their own in the ninth, allowing the Griffins to steal the opener of the Deacons' CACC season.

Box Score

In the second half of the twin bill, the Deacons' bats were silenced by solid CHC pitching, as BC was able to scratch out just six hits against a trio of Griffins hurlers.  Sophomore righty Brad Smith was valiant in defeat, surrendering just two earned runs over seven great innings of work.  Steve Godowski was able to keep the Griffins down with two scoreless innings of relief, but the Deacons could not mount a comeback to salvage a split, dropping the 3-0 decision.

The team returns to action Sunday with a non-conference doubleheader against American International College.  First pitch is scheduled for Noon.
