Rodrigues, Daye lift Deacons past Post

BLOOMFIELD, NJ (January 25, 2011) - The men's basketball team ran their home winning streak to 31 consecutive games Tuesday night, as they overcame a second-half deficit to top visiting Post University in a pivotal CACC clash.  The victory moves the Deacons to 10-6 overall, and 7-1 in conference play.  Post dropped to 8-9 overall, and 6-3 in CACC action.

Coming into the game trailing Bloomfield by a single game in the loss column, the Eagles were able to stay with the high-powered Deacons attack, matching their counterparts basket-for-basket in the early going.  The first half saw seven lead changes over the first 20 minutes, with Bloomfield managing to mount a seven-point lead with three minutes remaining.  The Eagles were unable to draw even before the intermission, as Mike Williams' runner as time expired gave the Deacons a 46-40 lead at the break.

It was a different story in the second half, though, as Post stormed back with a run of their own to put Bloomfield's home winning streak in serious jeopardy.  With the Deacons leading by eight, the Eagles ripped off a 9-0 run to take a 58-57 lead with 12:40 to play.  They followed it with a 6-0 run a minute later, sending the Post contingent in the crowd into a frenzy and leaving the home team reeling.

But just when it seemed as if the sixth-longest homecourt winning streak was coming to an end, the duo of Ryan Rodrigues and Ahmad Harris teamed up to orchestrate a 7-0 Bloomfield run in the most uplifting of fashions.  Rodrigues drained a pair of deep threes to cut the lead to one, and Harris picked the pocket Post guard La'Shaun Yates with a trademark steal on the next possession, laying the ball in to put the Deacons up one.

"That was a huge run for us," Bloomfield head coach Gerald Holmes said.  "Post was playing well, but we got some big plays from our guards to get us back in it.  It really changed the momentum in the game."

It was a nip-and-tuck battle from then on, with neither team leading by more than three points until the final two minutes of the contest.  Clinging to an 82-81 lead with 1:50 to play, the Deacons capitalized on empty Post possessions to score the game's final seven points, icing the victory from the free-throw line and picking up the huge come-from-behind victory.

Senior guard Gage Daye extended his streak of 30-plus point performances to three consecutive games in the victory, dropping a game-high 30 points and finishing a perfect 16-16 from the charity stripe.  Rodrigues, the man responsible for the run that brought the Deacons off the mat, finished with 17 points and connected on five of his eight three-point attempts.  Harris finished the evening with 13 points, seven rebounds and four assists, while Art Ellis came off the bench to notch 11 first-half points.

The Deacons return to action Saturday, January 29 with a home contest against CACC South Division foe Goldey Beacom College.  Tip-off is scheduled for 3:00 PM.
