Hicks, Harris lead Deacons past Dominican

BOX SCORE

BLOOMFIELD, N.J. (December 6, 2011) -
Sophomore guard Terry Hicks (Neptune, N.J.) netted a game-high 22 points and Ahmad Harris (Linden, N.J.) finished with a double-double Tuesday evening, as Bloomfield's men's basketball team improved to 4-5 overall and 1-1 in conference play with a 61-58 victory over CACC rival Dominican College.

The visiting Chargers were able to jump out on top in the early stages of the contest, engineering a 12-4 run over the first six minutes of the contest.  Dominican's lead would remain as high as seven points at 26-19 with just over five minutes to play, but the Deacons would chip away at the deficit and move to within a single point in the final minute of the first half.  The Chargers would add a pair of late free-throws to preserve the advantage, taking a slim 31-28 lead into the break.

Dominican would push the lead back to seven at the outset of the second half, but an 8-0 Bloomfield run would erase the cushion and give the Deacons their first lead of the night at 41-40 with 12:27 to play.   The Chargers would remain within striking distance, regaining the advantage at 50-49 with just under seven minutes remaining.  But it would prove to be Bloomfield who would come out on top of the defensive battle, as the Deacons quickly regained the lead and remained on top the rest of the way, holding off their North Division counterparts in dramatic fashion in the game's final minutes.

Hicks' final three points of the evening proved to be the dagger for Dominican, as the Neptune, N.J. native drilled a three-point try from just inside the halfcourt line as the shot clock expired to put Bloomfield up 60-55 with nine ticks remaining.  After a Chargers three, senior forward Matt Wafula (Harlem, N.Y.) converted one of two from the free-throw line, setting up a final desperation three for the visitors.  The final attempt drew iron as the buzzer sounded, handing Bloomfield its first conference victory and third home victory of the 2011-2012 season.

Hicks finished 7-14 from the field and 3-7 from beyond the arc in the win, while Harris finished with 10 points, and game-highs in rebounds (12) and assists (6) to go with four steals.  Wafula tallied 14 points in the frontcourt, to go with a pair of blocks on the evening.

Three players reached double-figures in scoring for Dominican, with guard Leon Porter netting 15 points to lead the club.  Davonne Dunlap totaled 14 points and 10 rebounds, while Cory Quimby notched 12 points and 7 rebounds.

Bloomfield returns to action Thursday, December 8 when they host CACC North Division rival Post University.  Tip-off for the contest is set for 8:00 PM.
