Deacons fall 4-1 at New Haven

BOX SCORE

NEW HAVEN, Conn. -
The Bloomfield College baseball team fell to 1-7 on the season Thursday afternoon, as they dropped a 4-1 road decision to the University of New Haven in a non-conference contest.

Senior southpaw Josh Chesler (Cave Creez, Az.) was outstanding over 6-and-1/3 innings, taking a no-hitter into the sixth and striking out seven.  The Chargers would only notch three hits off the lefty in his finest performance of the season, as the Deacons were able to take a 1-0 lead in the top of the third on an RBI single by junior outfielder Joe Meola (Maplewood, N.J.).  New Haven would finally break through in the bottom of the sixth, tying the score at 1-1 with an unearned run and thwarting Chesler's shutout effort.  The Chargers were able to plate three in the decisive rally of the day in the bottom of the seventh, grabbing a 4-1 lead on three hits with a pair of innings to play.  Bloomfield would prove unable to mount a late-game rally, falling to six games under .500 for the first time this season as the CACC regular season schedule begins.

Meola finished the day 3-for-3 in the loss, driving in the Deacons' only run of the afternoon, while rookies Kyle Murzyn (Glassboro, N.J.) and Francis Munoz (Perth Amboy, N.J.) notched their first career Bloomfield College hit in the setback.  Senior shortstop Anthony Koban (Elmwood Park, N.J.) and junior designated hitter Eduardo Valdez (Santo Domingo, D.R.) each notched a hit apiece to round out the Deacons' seven hits on the day.

Bloomfield returns to action Saturday, March 15, when they welcome CACC rival Concordia College to Westside Park in Newark, N.J. for the opening conference series of the 2013 season.  First pitch for the opener of the scheduled doubleheader is scheduled for Noon.
