WILMINGTON, De. - The Bloomfield College baseball team fell to 1-9 overall and 0-2 in CACC play Saturday afternoon, as they dropped both legs of their opening CACC doubleheader to Wilmington University in 16-2, and 10-9 road setbacks.
After dropping the opener, the Deacons were able to jump out on the 25th-ranked Wildcats in the top of the first, as senior shortstop
Anthony Koban (Elmwood Park, N.J.) followed a leadoff double by
Joe Meola (Maplewood, N.J.) with an RBI single to put Bloomfield ahead 1-0. Wilmington would knot the score at one on an RBI double in the bottom of the frame off Bloomfield starter
Francesco Scudiero (Brooklyn, N.Y.), but the sophomore righty would settle in, yielding three earned runs over eight innings while scattering nine hits in his best start of the season.
Wilmington would plate their second run of the contest in the bottom of the second to take a 2-1 lead, but Bloomfield would quickly rally with a run of their own in the top of third on a sacrifice fly by junior
Reyvis Rivas (Union City, N.J.). The Deacons would rally for six runs in the top of the fourth - all with two outs in the inning - to take a sizable 8-2 advantage midway through the contest. An RBI walk by Koban began the scoring, with a Wilmington infield error bringing the tally to three runs in the inning. An RBI single by junior outfielder
Paul Chong (Rutherford, N.J.) followed, with Rivas delivering the final blow of the frame - a two-RBI double - to bring the Bloomfield lead to six and put the Wildcats on the ropes.
Wilmington would score three runs in the bottom of the fifth to cut the deficit to 8-5, but Bloomfield would counter with a run in the top of the sixth, with Koban scoring on a wild pitch to push the lead to 9-5. The Wildcats would score the final five runs of the afternoon, however, notching a run off Scudiero in the bottom of the eighth and four off the Bloomfield bullpen in the bottom of the ninth to secure the doubleheader sweep and push the Deacons' losing streak to six consecutive games.
The Deacons totaled nine hits in the one-run loss, with Koban finishing the game 3-for-3 with a pair of RBIs. Rivas led the club with three RBIs in the loss, while Chong finished the setback 2-for-4 with an RBI. In the opener, junior designated hitter
Eduardo Valdez (Santo Domingo, D.R.) led the club with a 3-for-4 performance with a home run and an RBI.
Bloomfield returns to action Monday, March 25, when they travel to take on non-conference opponent East Stroudsburg University. First pitch for the contest is scheduled for 3:00 PM.
