PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The Bloomfield College baseball team improved to 4-13 overall and 3-5 in conference play Tuesday afternoon, as they took both legs of a midweek CACC road doubleheader against the University of the Sciences. After taking game one by a 5-1 margin, the club rallied for three runs in the 11th inning to notch a 4-1 victory and complete a sweep of the day's action.
Senior righty
Luis Nova (Santo Domingo, D.R.) picked up his first victory of the season in the opener, going six strong innings and yielding just a single unearned run while scattering seven hits and striking out four. After a Sciences run gave the home team a 1-0 advantage in the bottom of the first, the Deacons followed with runs in their next three trips to the plate to take a 3-1 lead. An RBI groundout by rookie
Holvin Figueroa (Vineland, N.J.) plated Bloomfield's first run of the afternoon, with a Sciences error scoring an unearned run to give the Deacons a 2-1 lead in the top of the third. Figueroa added a sacrifice fly in the top of the fourth to move Bloomfield's lead to 3-1, with the cushion standing the rest of the way. Junior outfielder
Paul Chong (Rutherford, N.J.) added an RBI triple - his second three-bagger of the game - in the top of the ninth, and Figueroa added his third RBI of the contest with a single to push the lead to 5-1 and secure a game one victory for the visitors. Chong and designated hitter
Eduardo Valdez (Santo Domingo, D.R.) each finished the opener 2-for-4, with Figueroa's three RBIs leading the team.
A pitcher's duel would ensue in game two, with senior southpaw
Josh Chesler (Cave Creek, Az.) yielding just one run over seven stellar innings of work to keep the Deacons in front for the first six innings of the contest. Bloomfield was able to grab a 1-0 lead in the top of the second, as Figueroa plated Valdez with an RBI single to bring his total of runs driven in to four on the afternoon. The lead would hold until the bottom of the seventh, when a two-out RBI triple by Sciences would knot the score at a run apiece with two innings to play. The Devils would threaten again in the bottom of the ninth, but would be turned away by Bloomfield sophomore righty
Lucas Junger (Waretown, N.J.), sending the game to extra innings.
It would prove to be the Deacons who would provide the decisive rally of the low-scoring contest, as Chong capped his 3-for-5 performance and a five-hit day with a two-out RBI single in the top of the 11th to give Bloomfield a 2-1 lead. The Deacons would plate two more runs in the frame to push the lead to 4-1, securing the extra-inning victory and completing their first CACC sweep of the season.
Figueroa joined Chong with a 3-for-5 performance in game two, leading the club for the second-straight game with two RBIs. Junger went three innings on the mound for the Deacons in the win, picking up his first career Bloomfield College victory.
Bloomfield returns to action Thursday, April 4, when they travel to take on American International College in a non-conference road contest. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
