Joe Meola (Maplewood, NJ) hit a walk-off single to score freshman
PJ Cardone (North Bergen, NJ) from third base and give Bloomfield a 5-4 victory over visiting USciences in the 11th inning at Yogi Berra Stadium. The Game 2 winning hit gave the Deacons a sweep on the evening's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) double-dip as they took Game 1 against the Devils by a score of 3-2. Bloomfield upped their overall record to 5-11 while winning their third consecutive CACC match-up, improving to 5-3 in conference play. USciences fell to 1-19 overall and have yet to win in CACC action with their recording standing at 0-6 after the setback.
GAME ONE BOX SCOREGame 1 saw the Deacons put up all their runs in the 1st inning with 2 outs on the board. Senior
Dominique Parra (Bronx, NY) got the opening inning action underway with Bloomfield's first hit of the contest. Parra would later score on an error by the Devils shortstop on a fly ball in the outfield. Juniors
Shadi Azar (South San Francisco, CA) and
Juan Hilario (Bronx, NY) would also cross the plate before the inning ended and the Deacons had all the runs they would need with right-handed pitcher
Lucas Junger (Waretown, NJ) on the mound. Junger (2-1) scattered 2 runs and 6 hits across 8 innings of work and struck out 10 batters. Sophomore reliever
Kyle Murzyn (Glassboro, NJ) came on in the 9th inning to close the door on USciences and pick up his third save on the season.
In Game 2 action, the Deacons found a way to answer the Devils at each turn eventually leading to Meola's walk-off finish. Usciences got on the board first in the opening inning of the game with a sac fly off of Deacon starter
Allen Rivera (Vineland, NJ) to go up 1-0. Bloomfield would answer in the bottom of the inning when Cardone came across the plate to knot the score at 1-1. The Devils tacked on two more runs (3-1) in the 2nd inning only to be answered in the 4th inning by Bloomfield (3-3). Both CACC teams put up a run in the 6th inning (4-4) and then the Deacon bullpen shutdown the USciences bats, not allowing a single hit for the next three innings. Cardone stepped to the plate in the bottom of the 11th and hit a double to right center that set up the game ending heroics. He would advance to third on a wild pitch just before Meola's single brought him home. Senior reliever
David Martinez (Staten Island, NY) picked up the win (1-2) going 3 solid innings giving up 3 hits. Meola went 2-for-4 during Game 2 with the all-important RBI. Parra and Cardone both hit doubles in the second game, as PJ finished the contest 2-for-5 and Dominique went 1-for-4.
