BLOOMFIELD, NJ
(January 4, 2011) - The men's basketball team improved to a perfect 3-0 in CACC play Tuesday night, showcasing their high-powered offense and superior depth in a 95-72 victory over North Division rival Felician College.
The Deacons' endless amount of weapons were on display in the club's sixth win of the season, with 11 players seeing at least 10 minutes of action. The contests' opening two minutes saw rookie sharpshooter
Steve Henderson come out scorching, knocking down a trio of threes in his first three attempts to give Bloomfield a quick 11-6 lead. The Felician offense struggled to keep pace, notching just nine points over the first seven minutes and allowing the Deacons' lead to balloon to 22-9.
Bloomfield would stretch the advantage to as many as 18 points in the opening frame, before a Falcons surge cut the deficit to single digits at 35-26 with five minutes to play. But a pair of steals by junior guard
Ahmad Harris led to back-to-back buckets for the Deacons, moving the lead back to 13 and allowing the home team to take a 47-32 lead into the break.
It was more of the same in the second half, as Bloomfield shot 55% from the field and 62% from beyond the arch to squash any hopes of a Felician comeback. Falcons forwards Devon Young and Suquan Gary netted 24, and 21 points respectively to post the highest totals of the contest, but it would not be enough to match the balanced Deacons onslaught, as eight players totaled at least seven points to help engineer the 23-point victory.
"This was a great win for us tonight," Bloomfield head coach
Gerald Holmes said. "We spread the ball around offensively, and we had a lot of different guys make significant contributions. Defensively we saw some improvement as well, which is good. We have a tough game against Dominican on Thursday, so we need to be prepared and hopefully keep the momentum going."
Henderson would finish the evening 6-11 from long-range, netting 18 points in his second-straight outstanding performance. Senior guard
Gage Daye made his presence felt at both ends of the floor, going for 17 points, 11 rebounds and six assists in a double-double effort. Harris would finish his night with a game-high six steals to go with 13 points and three rebounds, while
Robert Young pitched in 11 points off the bench to round out the double-figure scorers.
The Deacons return to action Thursday, January 6, with a second-straight home CACC test against rival Dominican College. Tip-off is scheduled for 8:00 PM.
