PHILADELPHIA - The baseball team fell to 8-18 overall and 4-4 in CACC play Saturday afternoon, dropping a 3-2 decision to the University of the Sciences in the opener, and losing 7-1 to the Devils in the late game of a weekend doubleheader to fall to .500 in conference action.
In the opener, Bloomfield righty
Steve Godowski put forth another dominant performance, yielding a pair of earned run overs seven and 2/3 innings of work while striking out six and walking one. But three Bloomfield errors proved to be the difference, as the Devils notched an unearned run in the bottom of the eighth that would prove to be the difference. The Deacons could not counter with a rallie of their own in the top of the ninth, dropping the one-run decision and leaving the visitors in search of a much-needed split.
Junior first baseman
Rafael Medina smacked his first home run of the season over the right field wall in the top of the fourth, earning the team's lone RBI of the contest.
Joe Meola,
Alberto Ruiz, and
Chris Rosa each notched a hit apiece in the setback.
In Game Two, Deacons hurler
Sean Stimpfel battled through injury and a three-run USCI first inning to go five innings, shutting down the Devils after the tough first frame and keeping Bloomfield in the ball game. An
Allen Rivera RBI groundout cut the deficit to 3-1 heading into the seventh inning, but a four-run USCI seventh put the game out of reach at 7-1 with two innings to play. The Deacons could not mount a late-game comeback, suffering their fourth conference loss in eight games.
"We had a really good opportunity to separate ourselves from the pack in conference, and we let it slip away because we simply did not play good baseball," Bloomfield head coach
Jeff Watson said. "We need to make some serious adjustments, but we have a chance to get right back on track Monday against Post. So hopefully, we can do that."
Bloomfield returns to action Monday, April 4 with a road CACC doubleheader against Post University. First pitch for the opener is set for 1:00 PM.
