ORANGEBURG, N.Y. - The Bloomfield College baseball team fell to 21-16 overall and 13-7 in conference play Saturday afternoon, as they dropped both legs of a road doubleheader to CACC rival Dominican College by scores of 5-3, and 7-5.
In the opener, the Deacons were able to grab a 1-0 lead in the top of the second on an RBI groundout by
Joe Meola (Maplewood, N.J.), but fell behind after a five-run Dominican spurt in the bottom half of the inning. The Chargers advantage would hold up over the remainder of the contest, despite a late Bloomfield rally in the top of the eighth inning.
Emilio Fernandez (Woodland Park, N.J.) plated
Jonattan Fernandez (Woodland Park, N.J.) with an RBI triple to cut the deficit to 5-2, and junior third baseman
Anthony Koban (Elmwood Park, N.J.) followed with a sacrifice fly to move the Deacons to within two. But the late-game rally would fall short, as Dominican enduced a scoreless Bloomfield ninth to preserve the 5-3 win.
The visitors would fall behind 2-0 in the early stages of Game Two, but would cut the deficit in half in the top of the fifth on an RBI single by
Jonattan Fernandez. But Dominican would move the lead to 6-1 over their next two trips to the plate, putting the Deacons in a hole midway through the contest. Bloomfield would add a run in the top of the seventh, and a pair of runs in the top of the eighth on RBI hits by
Mike Monaco (Avenel, N.J.) and Meola to cut the deficit to 6-4. Dominican would add a run in the bottom of the inning to move the lead back to 7-4, but Bloomfield would mount a final rally in the top of the ninth. The rally would fall just short, though, with Koban's RBI groundout proving to be the only run to bring the final score to 7-5.
Jonattan Fernandez would finish the contest 4-5 at the plate, while junior outfielder
#Michael Judd, Jr.# (Flanders, N.J.) went 2-4 for the game.
Bloomfield returns to action Thursday, May 3 when they travel to American International College for a non-conference matchup. First pitch for the contest is scheduled for 3:00 PM.
