Deacons fall to Adelphi in season opener

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. - The Bloomfield College baseball team fell to 0-1 on the season Monday afternoon, as they dropped a 6-4 road decision to non-conference opponent Adelphi University in the club's 2013 season opener.

Starter Luis Nova (Santo Domingo, D.R.) was solid for the Deacons over four innings, allowing four hits and striking out four.  Adelphi was able to take a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth, as a Bloomfield throwing error led to a pair of unearned runs to put the Panthers up a pair.  Bloomfield countered with a run of its own in the next half inning, as senior shortstop Jonattan Fernandez (Woodland Park, N.J.) plated outfielder Paul Chong (Rutherford, N.J.) with a one-out sacrifice fly to cut the deficit to 2-1.

The Deacons would tie the score at two in the top of the eighth, as junior catcher Reyvis Rivas (Union City, N.J.) singled in center fielder Joe Meola (Maplewood, N.J.) to bring the visitors even.  It would be the closest Bloomfield would come to pulling off the come-from-behind victory, however, as Adelphi would counter with the decisive blow of the afternoon, a four-run bottom of the eighth that would put the game out of reach.  The Deacons would plate two more runs in the top of the ninth off an RBI double by rookie David Rivera (Bay Shore, N.Y.) and an RBI single by Meola, but the comeback effort would fall short, as Adelphi would hang on to preserve the two-run victory and drop the Deacons to 0-1 on the young campaign.

Senior outfielder Felipe Medrano (Santiago, D.R.) finished the day 3-for-4 with three singles in the loss, notching the first three-hit game of his Bloomfield College career, while Meola finished the afternoon 2-for-4 with an RBI.  Senior left-hander Josh Chesler (Cave Creek, Az.) took the loss for the Deacons, surrendering four runs over four innings of work while striking out four.

Bloomfield returns to action Thursday, February 27, when they welcome Nyack College for the club's 2013 home opener.  First pitch for the contest is scheduled for 3 p.m.
