QUEENS, N.Y. - Bloomfield's baseball team moved to 7-9 overall Sunday afternoon, as they split a non-conference road doubleheader with Queens College. The Deacons fell 10-3 in the opener, picking up the victory by a 4-3 margin in game two.
In the second half of the doubleheader, senior lefty
John Vilichka (Port Reading, N.J.) was solid over 4.2 innings of work, yielding two earned runs on four hits while striking out three to put Bloomfield in a position to earn the split. The Deacons would take a 2-0 lead in the top of the second, with junior outfielder
#Michael Judd, Jr.# (Flanders, N.J.) notching an RBI on a fielder's choice to put the visitors on the board. Senior outfielder
Emilio Fernandez (Woodland Park, N.J.) followed with an RBI single of his own, capping the rally and putting Bloomfield up a pair.
After Queens plated an unearned run in the bottom of the third,
Jonattan Fernandez (Woodland Park, N.J.) plated Judd, Jr. with an RBI single in the top of the fourth to extend the Deacons' lead to 3-1 midway through the contest. Queens would mount a rally in the top of the fifth, knotting the score at three before Vilichka was relieved by freshman
Francesco Scudiero (Brooklyn, N.Y.). An unearned run would give Bloomfield the lead for good in the top of the sixth, as
Mike Monaco (Avenel, N.J.) scored on a Queens fielding error to put the Deacons up 4-3. Scudiero would work out of a jam in the bottom of the sixth, getting a double-play ball to end a bases-loaded rally by the Knights and preserve the slim one-run advantage. The rookie would close out the victory in the seventh, picking up his second victory of the season.
Emilio Fernandez led the Deacons with two hits in the victory, while
Jonattan Fernandez,
Edgardo Fernandez (Newark, N.J.) Anthony Koban (Elmwood Park, N.J.) and Judd, Jr. each picked up a hit apiece. Judd capped his solid day at the plate with a pair of runs scored in the win.
Bloomfield returns to action Tuesday, March 20 when they welcome CACC rival Post University for a conference doubleheader at Westside Park in Newark, N.J. First-pitch for the opener is scheduled for Noon.
