Deacons split Sunday doubleheader

Take opener from USci, fall 7-1 in rain-shortened loss to Saint Rose

WEST PALM BEACH, FL (March 6, 2011) - The baseball team went 1-1 in their doubleheader Sunday afternoon, topping the University of the Sciences in the opener and falling to The College of Saint Rose in a rain-shortened second contest.  The day moved the Deacons to 3-7 overall.

In the morning tilt, junior southpaw Eric Kamp was shut down the USci lineup over eight and a third masterful innings of work, surrendering just one unearned run while scattering four hits and striking out three.  The Deacons answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the second, when Luis Buron reached on a fielder's choice to pick up the RBI and knot the score at a run apiece.

The starters settled in after the early scoring, stifling their adversaries and matching their pitching counterparts zero for zero.  Bloomfield was finally able to break through in the bottom of the eighth, when an Emilio Fernandez sacrifice fly plated David Nieves to put the Deacons up 2-1.  Kamp was able to get one out in the ninth, but the Devils threatened with runners at second and third and only one down.

After an intentional walk to load the bases, senior reliever Dave Ricci came on to record the final two outs in dramatic fashion, blowing away pinch hitter David Murphy for a key strikeout, and forcing a popup to first to close out the nail-biting victory by the slimmest of margins.

In the afternoon contest, the Deacons struck early against Saint Rose with an RBI single off the bat of Alberto Ruiz in the top of the first.  But the Golden Knights would rally with a seven-run inning in the bottom of the third off starter Steve Godowski, totaling seven hits and four earned runs to put Bloomfield down by six.  Before the Deacons could chip away at the deficit, afternoon rains canceled the remainder of the day's action, handing Bloomfield a tough five-inning loss to swallow.

"It was nice to get a win in the first game, but the second game really leaves a bitter taste in our mouths," Bloomfield head coach Jeff Watson said.  "We got an outstanding start from Eric in game one, and Dave (Ricci) came on to get two huge outs for us.  But we ended the day not playing our best baseball, and we need to take a lesson from that.  The game can end due to weather at any time, so you need to be playing your best baseball all the time, from the first pitch. Hopefully we can do that tomorrow against Wilmington."

The Deacons return to action Monday, March 7 with a game against CACC foe Wilmington University on the campus of Lynn University in Boca Raton, Florida.  First pitch is scheduled for 10:00 AM.
