WILMINGTON - The baseball team fell to 9-21 overall and 5-7 in CACC play Sunday afternoon, as they fell in both legs of their doubleheader with first-place Wilmington University by scores of 10-2, and 11-4.
The Deacons stayed with the Wildcats - who came into the day's action ranked 13th in the nation with a record of 23-3 - through the first six innings of play in Game One, as southpaw
Sean Stimpfel surrendered four earned runs on seven hits. After Wilmington grabbed an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second,
Jason Luzzi notched an RBI single in the top of the fourth to even the score at one.
But the Wildcats would score nine runs over the final five innings of play, capitalizing on six Bloomfield errors to jump out to a 10-1 lead.
Chris Rosa tallied an RBI groundout in the Bloomfield eighth to plate the club's second run of the game, but it would conclude the Deacons' scoring, the Wildcats grabbing the opener in decisive fashion.
Rafael Medina was the leading offensive player for Bloomfield in the loss, going 2-4 with an RBI.
Alberto Ruiz,
Mike Monaco and
Allen Rivera joined Luzzi with a hit apiece.
It was more of the same in Game Two, as Medina's sacrifice fly in the top of the first was quickly erased by an eight-run Wilmington first, putting the Deacons down 8-1 after one. The Wildcats would take on a trio of runs over the final eight innings, proving to be too much for Bloomfield to overcome. Monaco's two-run double in the top of the sixth gave the junior backstop his second hit of the afternoon, scoring
Alex Sepulveda and
Anthony Addone to bring the Deacons' total to three. Medina notched his second RBI of the game with a run-scoring fielder's choice in the ninth, wrapping up the 11-4 setback.
Luzzi, Rivera, Rosa, Monaco, Sepulveda, Medina and
Michael Judd Jr. each notched a hit for the Deacons in the loss, while
Steve Godowski took the loss on the mound.
"Unfortunately, we did not pick a good day to not play our best baseball," Bloomfield head coach
Jeff Watson said. "Wilmington took advantage of the mistakes we made, and we were able to capitalize on theirs. We've still got a ways to go in our conference schedule, so we're not out of it by any means. If we can play good baseball the rest of the way, we can achieve all the goals we set out to accomplish when our season began."
The Deacons return to action Tuesday, April 12 with a non-conference home game against C.W. Post University. First pitch is set for 3:00 PM.
